Sen Graham Exposes Republican Debt Lie by Attacking Social Security

more from Sarah Jones

sen graham

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) was on Fox News Sunday this morning proving to America that he doesn?t really care about the debt problem at all, he just wants to appease his hatred for misnamed ?entitlement? programs like Social Security.

Graham insists that we must raise the age for Social Security in order to deal with the debt problem, but the Social Security Trust Fund has nothing to do with the deficit, and even former President Reagan knew this.

Here?s Senator Graham on Fox this morning courtesy of Think Progress:

Graham said, ?I?m not going to raise the debt ceiling unless we get serious about keeping the country from becoming Greece, saving Social Security and Medicare [sic]. So here?s what I would like: meaningful entitlement reform ? not to turn Social Security into private accounts, not to take a voucher approach to Medicare ? but, adjust the age for Social Security, CPI changes and means testing and look beyond the ten-year window. I cannot in good conscience raise the debt ceiling without addressing the long term debt problems of this country and I will not.?

Graham is saying that Republicans will bring their ?entitlement? grievances to the debt ceiling fight in order to address long term debt. So, he is just pretending to care about deficit reduction and clinging to raising the age for Social Security as a way to get there, unless he?s really unaware of how the Social Security Trust Fund operates. It is funded by payroll taxes. We pay into it our entire working lives in order to have it later. It?s not here to fund reckless spending or wars.

A refresher for the Senator from way back in 1984, when Republican idol President Ronald Reagan explained to the math impaired, ?Social security has nothing to do with the deficit.?

Reagan said, ?Social Security, let?s lay it to rest once and for all? Social security has nothing to do with the deficit. Social Security is totally funded by the payroll tax levied on employer and employee. If you reduce the outgo of Social Security, that money would not go into the general fund or reduce the deficit. It would go into the Social Security Trust Fund. So Social Security has nothing to do with balancing a budget or raising or lowering the deficit.?

The national debt is the net accumulated borrowing by the federal government. The federal budget deficit is the amount that our federal government borrows each year, based on the difference between what we generate in revenue (e.g., taxes) and spending. Each year?s deficit is then added to the existing debt. Thus, since Social Security has nothing to do with the deficit, it also has nothing to do with the accumulation of deficits, known as debt.

If Senator Graham is so concerned about our debt, why doesn?t he start by addressing the Republican unfunded entitlement Medicare Part D first? Dan Gross explained that it is the ?Republican-designed Medicare Part D prescription drug benefit that threatens to explode entitlement costs, by as much as $1 trillion in 10 years.? You see, Republicans left Medicare Part D unfunded and also left it up to the private sector insurance companies to charge what they wished for the drugs rather than force competition to do its thing.

Yet Senator Graham says he won?t move unless the Social Security age is raised because ?I cannot in good conscience raise the debt ceiling without addressing the long term debt problems of this country and I will not.? How is raising the Social Security age going to address the ?long term debt problem? of this country?

Where was Graham?s worried conscience when Cheney told us, ?Deficits don?t matter? and former President Bush governed accordingly? If Graham really cared so much about the ?long term debt? problem, he might have spoken up when under Bush taxes were lowered while starting two unfunded wars, which were also left off of the budget at the time. President Obama initiated some honest accounting by adding those bills to our debt. Those deficits (lowering revenue while increasing spending and borrowing to cover the difference) accumulated up over time, and are a significant part of the debt problem. Wars are expensive.

Now that those credit card bills are due, Graham and Republicans want to force Seniors to pay the bill, only cutting Social Security would not even go to the deficit. In other words, this argument works on the misinformed, but it?s a shell game. The argument over whether or not Social Security needs to be reformed doesn?t belong in a fight over the debt ceiling. Let Senator Graham make this argument in a situation where he?s not holding the country hostage over an unrelated matter.

Senator Graham has exposed his argument as the craven lie it is. He doesn?t give a hoot about debt. What he cares about is using every single Republican-created crisis as a justification to destroy the social safety net, even when the programs he takes aim at are unrelated to our deficit.

Back to the drawing board for property tax - Cyprus Mail

THE GOVERNMENT has backed down from its intention to update immovable property prices by applying a formula that stakeholders had said would hike up taxes many times over and would drive the economy deeper into recession.?

The House plenum is due to discuss an amended bill on January 17 that will remove a provision to update property prices, which was part of the preliminary agreement between Cyprus and its international lenders.?

Interior Minister Eleni Mavrou said that the bill would not now update property values using the consumer price index (CPI) over 1980 to 2012.

?We?re going back to the 1980 values,? Mavrou said referring to the way immovable property tax is currently calculated, which is on the property?s value on January 1, 1980.

Lawmakers recently discussed, but postponed voting on, a previous bill that was going to update the values to 2012.?

Hotels said that would increase by nine times the amount of tax a hotel would have to pay, and stakeholders and lawmakers asked the government to amend the bill.

?It now seems that the amount that we must aim for is significantly lower than the ?180 million we were discussing,? Mavrou said.

She said that the terms of the amended bill are under discussion with Cyprus? lenders and the finance ministry to clarify how much the government should aim to receive in taxes, though she added the figure might be somewhere over ?60 million.?

It was not immediately clear if the tax rate for the value bands ? also subject to changes under the bills previous guise ? was part of discussions.?

But Mavrou said that ?the average household? would not be impacted as they fall under the tax threshold.?

The CPI provision had drawn a large reaction from landowners, property developers and hoteliers who said the changes would drive the economy deeper into recession.

Under the changes as they were tabled for discussion under the bailout agreement, ?the taxable figure ?levied on the total value of all properties in a person?s or company?s name ? would be the result of multiplying the 1980 value of the property by about 3.5.

A property worth ?170,000 in 1980 values would have risen to ?595,000 after multiplying it with the CPI. The chairman of property developers Pantelis Leptos said it was an unfair bill that would act as a deterrent for investment.

The hotels association PASYXE chairman, Haris Loizides, said that the bill as it stood increased the tax a hotel had to pay by nine times, which would have translated to a hotel that paid ?27,600 in IPT last year needing to pay ?253,380 in 2013.

APNewsBreak: Sen. Crapo won't fight DUI charge

WASHINGTON (AP) ? U.S. Sen. Michael Crapo, the Idaho Republican arrested on suspicion of drunken driving, doesn't plan to fight the charges when he appears in court in January, a spokesman said Friday.

Meanwhile, results from a secondary blood alcohol test performed at the jail show the conservative three-term senator registered a higher level about an hour after being arrested than when he was first tested by the police officer who stopped him.

Police have said Crapo registered a blood alcohol level of 0.11 percent when he was pulled over early Sunday in the Washington suburb of Alexandria, Va., after running a red light. But a secondary test performed after Crapo was brought to the jailhouse ? the one that will be used in court ? registered at 0.14, nearly twice the legal limit, according to a law enforcement official with knowledge of the arrest. The official wasn't authorized to release information publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

"He does not plan to contest the charges," said Crapo spokesman Lindsay Nothern, adding that Crapo has consulted with a local Virginia attorney ahead of his Jan. 4 court hearing.

A blood alcohol level of 0.14 means Crapo tested 1/100 of a percentage point below the level that would have mandated jail time under Virginia law. The legal limit in Virginia, which has strict drunken driving laws, is 0.08 percent.

Crapo has apologized and taken responsibility for the incident in a statement, but he hasn't spoken publicly about the arrest. Crapo returned to Washington from Idaho on Wednesday as lawmakers pursue a solution to the looming fiscal cliff, but he wasn't immediately available to comment Friday.

A number of factors could explain the discrepancy between the preliminary breathalyzer test, performed on the street when Crapo was pulled over shortly after midnight, and the jailhouse test, conducted just before 2 a.m. The higher level at the jailhouse could indicate Crapo was drinking shortly before getting behind the wheel and his body was still absorbing the alcohol. But another possible explanation is that blood alcohol testing simply isn't a perfect science, said Michael Hlastala, a breath testing expert and former physiology professor at the University of Washington.

"It could be consistent with rising blood alcohol levels," Hlastala said. "But it just depends on the way the person was breathing, and other factors."

Alexandria police say Crapo was alone in his vehicle when he ran a red light, was pulled over and failed field sobriety tests. He was taken to the Alexandria jail and released on an unsecured $1,000 bond about 5 a.m. Sunday. Crapo is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 4 ? the day after the start of the next Congress. Crapo was handily re-elected in 2010 and won't have to run again until 2016.

It's still not clear where Crapo was coming from when he was arrested, and the senator hasn't explained the circumstances of the arrest. Court records show Crapo residing in Southeast Washington, a short drive over the Potomac River from the historic suburb where he was arrested.

The 61-year-old's arrest two days before Christmas stunned colleagues and constituents alike, not only because of his squeaky-clean image but also because the senator, a Mormon, had said previously he abstains from alcohol, in accordance with his church's practices.

Many of Crapo's Republican colleagues, including Sen. Jim Risch, Idaho's senior senator, have come to his defense, suggesting Crapo can overcome the indiscretion and remain a viable leader. Crapo's home-state newspaper, the Idaho Statesman, ran an editorial with the headline: "We can all learn from Sen. Crapo's mistake."

What do you want to know about exercise?

It's the strange, limbo-like time between Christmas and New Year's, which means one thing: If you're at work, you're totally pretending to be productive.

If you need something to do, take some time today to answer one very important question: What do you want to know about exercise?

I ask because I've written about so many topics - motivation, weight loss, the basics of cardio and weight training, how to get started, how to work harder and I've even created a variety of programs and workouts for your exercise pleasure. I have information for seniors, for people who are overweight or obese, people with knee problems and people who want to blow it out the old bloomer leg with killer high intensity workouts.

Now, I posted this question a couple of years ago, which is why you'll see comments from the previous posting - comments, by the way, that helped me shape my content in the last couple of years. Now, I'd like to do it again: What do you want to know about exercise?

Do you want new workouts? Articles about specific topics? Do you have questions you never seem to find a good answer for? Leave a comment and tell me what you want to know about exercise. Maybe you'll inspire new and interesting topics for the coming year.

Blades and clades: Why some grasses got better photosynthesis

Dec. 24, 2012 ? Even on the evolutionary time scale of tens of millions of years there is such a thing as being in the right shape at the right time. An anatomical difference in the ability to seize the moment, according to a study led by Brown University biologists, explains why more species in one broad group, or clade, of grasses evolved a more efficient means of photosynthesis than species in another clade did.

Their findings appear this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Biologists refer to the grasses that have evolved this better means of making their food in warm, sunny and dry conditions with the designation "C4." Grasses without that trait are labeled "C3."

What scientists had already known is that while all of the grasses in the BEP and PACMAD clades have the basic metabolic infrastructure to become C4 grasses, the species that have actually done so are entirely in the PACMAD clade. A four-nation group of scientists wondered why that disparity exists.

To find out, Brown postdoctoral researcher and lead author Pascal-Antoine Christin spent two years closely examining the cellular anatomy of 157 living species of BEP and PACMAD grasses. Using genetic data the team also organized the species into their evolutionary tree, which they then used to infer the anatomical traits of ancestral grasses that no longer exist today, a common analytical technique known as ancestral state reconstruction. That allowed them to consider how anatomical differences likely evolved among species over time.

Paradoxically, to understand C4 evolution, the researchers focused on the anatomy of C3 grasses in each clade.

In general what they found was that in the leaves of many PACMAD C3 grasses the veins were closer together, and that the veins themselves were surrounded by larger cells ("bundle sheath" cells) than in BEP C3 grasses. Ultimately PACMAD grasses had a higher ratio of bundle sheath cells to mesophyll cells (cells that fill in the area between veins).

In C4 plants, such an anatomical arrangement facilitates a more efficient transfer and processing of CO2 in the bundle sheath cells when CO2 is in relatively short supply. When temperatures get hot or plants become stressed, they stop taking in as much CO2, creating just such a shortage within the leaf.

So PACMADs as a group had developed an anatomical predisposition to C4 photosynthesis that BEP grasses didn't, said senior author Erika Edwards, an assistant professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at Brown.

"We found that consistently these PACMAD C3s are very different anatomically than the C3 BEPs," she said. "We think that was the evolutionary stepping stone to C4-like physiology."

When the new leaves turned over

It didn't used to be this way. Back around 60 or so million years ago, BEP and PACMAD grasses were more similar and both headed in the same direction. The distance between the leaf veins in both clades had been growing closer together. But then they started to diverge in a key way. The bundle sheath cells surrounding the veins in BEP grasses started to shrink down while those in PACMAD grasses stayed larger.

For a long time the climate didn't particularly punish or reward either of those directions. But then climate changed, and opportunity knocked, Edwards said. Only PACMAD was near the proverbial door.

"When atmospheric CO2 decreased tens of millions of years after the split of the BEP and PACMAD clades, a combination of shorter [distances between veins] and large [sheath] cells existed only in members of the PACMAD clade, limiting C4 evolution to this lineage," Christin and co-authors wrote in the paper.

The researchers also found that evolution among C4 grasses was anatomically nuanced. Some C4 grasses evolved because of advantageous changes in outer sheath cells, while others saw the improvement in inner sheath cells.

Ultimately, Edwards said, studies like this one show that plant biologists have made important progress in understanding the big picture of when and where important plant traits evolved. That could lead to further advances in both basic science, and perhaps agriculture as well.

"Now that we have this increasingly detailed birds-eye view, we can start to become a more predictive science," she said. "Now we have the raw goods to ask interesting questions about why, for example, one trait evolves 10 times in this region of the tree but never over here. In terms of genetic engineering we're going to be able to provide some useful information to people who want to improve species, such as important crops."

In addition to Christin and Edwards, the paper's other authors at Brown were David Chatelet and Laura Garrison. Other authors were Colin Osborne of the University of Sheffield in the U.K.; J. Travis Columbus of Claremont Graduate University in California; Guillaume Besnard of the Universite Paul Sabatier-Ecole Nationale de Formation Agronomique in Tolouse, France; Trevor Hodkinson of Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland; and Maria Vorontsova of the Royal Botanic Gardens in Surrey, U.K.

The National Science Foundation (grants 0920147 and 0843231), the Marie Curie International Outgoing Fellowship (252568) and the Agence Nationale de la Recherche (10LABX-41) supported the research.

Police bring crime victim new cell phone | woman, police, beach ...

LAGUNA BEACH ? Police officials are bringing some Christmas spirit to a recent robbery victim on Tuesday, providing her with a new phone to replace one stolen during an attack.

The Laguna Beach Police Employee Association teamed up with the non-profit Crime Survivors organization and Boost Mobile to support the local hairstylist after she was violently attacked while leaving work on Dec. 8.

The woman, who authorities are not identifying because she was a crime victim, was walking from a Laguna Beach salon to her car when she was confronted by two men in a parking garage. The men pointed what turned out to be airsoft guns ? replica firearms that shoot plastic pellets -- at her, and demanded her wallet, said Larry Bammer, president of the Laguna Beach Police Association.

As the woman attempted to keep walking to her car, the men approached her, pressed one of the airsoft guns into her back and fired. The woman fought back as the men grabbed her purse, kicking and screaming before the robbers got her purse and ran away, Bammer said.

The robbers escaped with $100 in cash from the purse, which the woman needed for a month's worth of groceries, as well as a new cell phone, Bammer said. The woman also sustained a serious bruise and welt in the center of her back, where she had been shot by the airsoft gun.

Two of the officers who responded the night of the robbery paid the woman back the stolen $100 from their own pockets. Crime Survivors reached out to support the woman, while Boost Mobile agreed to donate a new HTC cell phone after hearing of the robbery.

Police say the two robbers, as well as a suspected getaway driver, were later arrested in Westminster. Their names were not immediately available.

WASHINGTON: Shoppers disappoint retailers this holiday season ...

? U.S. shoppers spent cautiously this holiday season, a disappointment for retailers who slashed prices to lure people into stores and now must hope for a post-Christmas burst of spending.

Sales of electronics, clothing, jewelry and home goods in the two months before Christmas increased 0.7 percent compared with last year, according to the MasterCard Advisors SpendingPulse report.

That was below the healthy 3 to 4 percent growth that analysts had expected - and it was the worst year-over-year performance since 2008, when spending shrank sharply during the Great Recession. In 2011, retail sales climbed 4 to 5 percent during November and December, according to ShopperTrak.

This year's shopping season was marred by bad weather and rising uncertainty about the economy in the face of possible tax hikes and spending cuts early next year. Some analysts say the massacre of schoolchildren in Newtown, Conn., earlier this month may also have chipped away at shoppers' enthusiasm.

Retailers still have time to make up lost ground. The final week of December accounts for about 15 percent of the month's sales, said Michael McNamara, vice president for research and analysis at MasterCard Advisors SpendingPulse.

Still, this season's weak sales could have repercussions for 2013, McNamara said. Retailers will make fewer orders to restock their shelves, and discounts will hurt their profitability. Wholesalers will buy fewer goods and orders to factories will likely drop in the coming months.

Steep discounts weren't enough to get people into stores, said Marshal Cohen, chief analyst at the market research firm NPD Inc.

"A lot of the Christmas spirit was left behind way back in Black Friday weekend," Cohen said, referring to the traditional retail rush the day after Thanksgiving. "We had one reason after another for consumers to say, 'I'm going to stick to my list and not go beyond it.'"

Holiday sales are a crucial indicator of the economy's strength. November and December account for up to 40 percent of annual sales for many retailers. If those sales don't materialize, stores are forced to offer steeper discounts. That's a boon for shoppers, but it cuts into stores' profits.

Spending by consumers accounts for 70 percent of overall economic activity, so the eight-week period encompassed by the SpendingPulse data is seen as a critical time not just for retailers but for manufacturers, wholesalers and companies at every other point along the supply chain.

The SpendingPulse data released Tuesday, which captures sales from Oct. 28 through Dec. 24 across all payment methods, is the first major snapshot of holiday retail sales. A clearer picture will emerge next week as retailers like Macy's and Target report revenue from stores open for at least a year. That sales measure is widely watched in the retail industry because it excludes revenue from stores that recently opened or closed, which can be volatile.

In the run-up to Christmas, analysts blamed bad weather for putting a damper on shopping. In late October, Superstorm Sandy battered the Northeast and mid-Atlantic states, which account for 24 percent of U.S. retail sales.

Shopping picked up in the second half of November, but then the threat of the country falling off a "fiscal cliff" gained strength, throwing consumers off track once again.

Lawmakers have yet to reach a deal that would prevent tax increases and government spending cuts set to take effect at the beginning of 2013. If the cuts and tax hikes kick in and stay in place for months, the Congressional Budget Office says the nation could fall back into recession.

Shopping over the past two months was weakest in areas affected by Sandy and a more recent winter storm in the Midwest. Sales declined by 3.9 percent in the mid-Atlantic and 1.4 percent in the Northeast compared with last year. They rose 0.9 percent in the north central part of the country.

The West and South posted gains of between 2 percent and 3 percent, still weaker than the 3 percent to 4 percent increases expected by many retail analysts.

Online sales, typically a bright spot, grew only 8.4 percent from Oct. 28 through Saturday, according to SpendingPulse. That's a dramatic slowdown from the online sales growth of 15 to 17 percent seen in the prior 18-month period, according to the data service.

Online sales did enjoy a modest boost after the recent snowstorm that hit the Midwest, McNamara said. Online sales make up about 10 percent of total holiday business.

Idaho Sen. Mike Crapo arrested for DUI

Alexandria Police Dept.

Sen. Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) in a photo released by the Alexandria Police Department, Dec. 23.

By NBC News and wire services

U.S. Sen. Mike Crapo of Idaho was arrested early Sunday morning in a suburb of Washington, D.C. for driving under the influence, according to a statement released by Alexandria, Va. police.

Crapo, a Republican, was stopped after a patrol officer saw his vehicle go through a red light. After failing field sobriety tests, he was arrested at 12:45 a.m. and ?taken into custody without incident,? according to the statement by Alexandria police.

"There was no refusal (to take sobriety tests), no accident, no injuries," Alexandria Police spokesman Jody Donaldson told The Associated Press. "Just a traffic stop that resulted in a DUI."?

In a statement Sunday night, Crapo said he was ?deeply sorry.?

?I made a mistake for which I apologize to my family, my Idaho constituents and any others who have put their trust in me,? he said. ?I accept total responsibility and will deal with whatever penalty comes my way in this matter. I will also undertake measures to ensure that this circumstance is never repeated."

Crapo (pronounced KRAY-poh) was released around 5 a.m. Sunday on an unsecured $1,000 bond. His court date is set for Jan. 4.?

Crapo has served in the Senate since 1998, where he has built a reputation as a staunch social and fiscal conservative. He is currently in his third term and won't have to run again until 2016.

A Mormon from Idaho Falls, Idaho, he has five children with his wife, Susan.

NBC's Frank Thorp and The Associated Press contributed reporting.

Does Every Consultant Need To Write a Book | Marketing and ...

Marketing podcast with Guy Kawasaki

I asked the question contained in the title of this post in a community I moderate on Google+ (Consultant Exchange- join us if you are a coach or consultant)

Somewhat predictably answers fell into two camps ? those with a book said yes it was very helpful and meaningful to their business. Those without a book said no they didn?t think it was necessary and that a well written blog might be more important.

In my business having a book (and now three) made a significant difference in terms of creating more speaking, branding and consulting opportunities. Now, a key measure in the equation is that these books are well regarded and sold well enough to stand on their own ? but there?s no question my books have led to a bigger brand for Duct Tape Marketing.

I posed the same question to my friend Guy Kawasaki and his take was a little more reserved ? ?Writing a book to open other opportunities is the wrong reason to write a book. You should write a book because you have something to say or are passionate about promoting a cause or idea.?

Kawasaki has written twelve books, including the just released APE: Author, Publisher, Entrepreneur ? How to Publish a Book. Kawasaki wrote the book to reveal everything he?s learned along the way as an author and entrepreneur with the added lessons gained from publishing his last two books without the aid of the traditional publishing machine.

APE is meant to introduce the concept of ?artisinal publishing? as a powerful avenue for anyone wishing to get their message heard in the form of a book much like an artist practicing and promoting their craft might do.

As someone that?s written several books I can tell you that if you have a desire to write a book, but have no desire to publish on your own, the section on writing a book is worth the money. If you do plan to write and publish your own work the guidance on the very specific elements of editing, formatting and submitting digital books is a gold mine.

I do believe that we have come to a point where honing and communicating a specific point of view is an essential practice in the worlds of coaching, consulting and marketing and a book is one format to do so.

More importantly perhaps is that you practice your craft in a way that allows you to gain the experience and insight needed to construct a point of view worth sharing ? do that and you?re on your way to writing that book.

NimbleTV beta goes live in New York City for a chosen few, streams paid TV anywhere they are

NimbleTV beta goes live in New York City for the chosen few, streams paid TV to wherever they are

Online video startup NimbleTV told us that service was just months away, and it's acting on that promise with the official launch of its private beta. The 250-plus New York City residents let into the beta will have the option to stream cable, satellite or other paid TV services to virtually any device with a modern web browser and a good broadband connection. Regular service could be available in the first quarter of 2013 at an estimated $20 per month, although this doesn't include the TV programming in question: NimbleTV's business model requires subscribing to traditional service that the company sets up on the customer's behalf. This is also presuming the provider doesn't encounter any legal obstacles. The fledgling firm lets customers sign up for service outside of their actual region, which could dodge around blackout policies on sports and other shows. If Aereo upset broadcasters by streaming local, over-the-air TV, an even more adventurous company could wind up in the same boat.

Writing and the Creative Imagination ?
How to Avoid ?Writer?s Block?

Thought I?d share a few simple thoughts on how to use
the amazing powers of your creative imagination to the
fullest in overcoming ?writer?s block??

Just letting you know that I start all my novels with a
BASIC PLOT (plan) and don?t have much idea how it?s
all going to end up (?pan out?). I don?t consciously use
techniques, like ?mindmapping? and have found that by
writing one chapter at a time then simply ?letting go?,
the story simply flows onto the next naturally (at least I think
it does!). It?s simply a matter of taking one step at a time,
then waiting for ?inspiration?*, which may take an hour, a
day, a week, or a month.

* By the way, the word ?inspire? translated from the ancient
Greek language, literally says, ?God breathed life into?.
Not that it?s Greek to me ? this ?not classical language scholar?!

When I get ?stuck? for a while, I take a break with a long
walk along the stunningly beautiful beaches here, which really
relaxes me and then the thoughts simply ?flow into my head.
This takes hold and I get a clear vision of the next small
step ahead (always) ? through the amazing powers of the
subconscious mind, which is where our INSPIRATION* comes
from? and this leads, impels (nice word!) us into ACTION.

Imagination leads to intuition (?the way God communicates with
us? via the antannae of the subconscious mind, I believe).
So use the amazing and unlimited powers of your creative
subconscious mind?

then
IT?S UP TO US TO ACT ON OUR ?CREATIVE? FEELINGS.

Hope these thoughts may be helpful to you in whatever endeavour
(creative or otherwise) you undertake in life.

Dragonflies have human-like 'selective attention'

Dec. 20, 2012 ? In a discovery that may prove important for cognitive science, our understanding of nature and applications for robot vision, researchers at the University of Adelaide have found evidence that the dragonfly is capable of higher-level thought processes when hunting its prey.

The discovery, to be published online December 20 in the journal Current Biology, is the first evidence that an invertebrate animal has brain cells for selective attention, which has so far only been demonstrated in primates.

Dr Steven Wiederman and Associate Professor David O'Carroll from the University of Adelaide's Centre for Neuroscience Research have been studying insect vision for many years.

Using a tiny glass probe with a tip that is only 60 nanometers wide -- 1500 times smaller than the width of a human hair -- the researchers have discovered neuron activity in the dragonfly's brain that enables this selective attention.

They found that when presented with more than one visual target, the dragonfly brain cell 'locks on' to one target and behaves as if the other targets don't exist.

"Selective attention is fundamental to humans' ability to select and respond to one sensory stimulus in the presence of distractions," Dr Wiederman says.

"Imagine a tennis player having to pick out a small ball from the crowd when it's traveling at almost 200kms an hour -- you need selective attention in order to hit that ball back into play.

"Precisely how this works in biological brains remains poorly understood, and this has been a hot topic in neuroscience in recent years," he says.

"The dragonfly hunts for other insects, and these might be part of a swarm -- they're all tiny moving objects. Once the dragonfly has selected a target, its neuron activity filters out all other potential prey. The dragonfly then swoops in on its prey -- they get it right 97% of the time."

Associate Professor O'Carroll says this brain activity makes the dragonfly a more efficient and effective predator.

"What's exciting for us is that this is the first direct demonstration of something akin to selective attention in humans shown at the single neuron level in an invertebrate," Associate Professor O'Carroll says.

"Recent studies reveal similar mechanisms at work in the primate brain, but you might expect it there. We weren't expecting to find something so sophisticated in lowly insects from a group that's been around for 325 million years.

"We believe our work will appeal to neuroscientists and engineers alike. For example, it could be used as a model system for robotic vision. Because the insect brain is simple and accessible, future work may allow us to fully understand the underlying network of neurons and copy it into intelligent robots," he says.

Kyle Bass on the End of the Debt Supercycle and a Coming Massive Devaluation of the Yen ...

... Most Difficult Time to Invest; The Belief Bubble

Late last month, Kyle Bass, managing partner of Hayman Capital, shared his thoughts in a video at the University of Virginia Darden School of Business Investing Conference with Professor Ken Eades.

It is a fantastic interview that echoes many of the things I have been saying about Japan for quite some time.

Interview Snips

Ken Eades kicks off the interview welcoming Kyle Bass mentioning that over the past few years his investment thesis has been then same. Eades then asks Bass to recap and review. what follows is Bass' reply.

Thematically, the bottom line is the total credit market debt-to-GDP globally is 350 percent. It's 200 trillion dollars' worth of debt against global GDP of roughly 62 trillion.

It's of our belief you are going to continue to see lower global growth, and you're going to see certain countries hit the proverbial end-point or wall where they have to restructure their debt. We've been particularly dogmatic with our view there.

Investing around that particular idea is very difficult. As Dick Mayo [Chairman, Mayo Capital and Founding Partner of GMO] said today, it's actually the most difficult time in the world to invest in his lifetime, and I would echo his comments. Investing in the environment that I am describing to you is the single hardest thing to do as far as investing is concerned over the last few decades.

So this is a debt super-cycle that is coming to an end at various end-points for different countries. We think you are going to continue to see yield compression in the developed world. We think the US and Europe could actually see negative nominal rates over the next 12 months which is something that as an academic is very hard to understand, as a participant really hard to understand. But it seems we are seeing enough rhetoric and research done on the subject that it's actually a real possibility. Maybe it's only a 20% possibility but the fact that it's even on the white board is something that's worthy of paying attention to.

A lot has happened in Japan in the last 12 months. In fact, in the last 2 months we believe Japan has crossed that proverbial Rubicon. We think that you've seen 20 years of conjecture regarding Japan's eventual demise. And now we see a point where, in the last couple months what you see is a continued deterioration in their balance of trade. It's actually running at about negative $100 billion or close to 10 trillion Yen. And we think given this resurgence of Chinese nationalism over the Senkaku crisis [disputed islands], you're going to see that move another 1.5 to 2 percent or another $100 billion. Put that in perspective. What that means is we could see full current account negativity in Japan in October. That's something nobody is ready for.

Think about it. You have a secular decline in the population, you have a balance of trade that is literally being rewritten and falling off a cliff, and their GDP is now tracking negative 3.5 or 4 percent.

So what has to happen in Japan. Now their backs are against the wall. They have a full crisis, and they absolutely have to change the manner in which they deal with their currency. And so we think over the last couple of months they have crossed the final Rubicon that turns the whole situation around and weakens the Yen from a currency perspective. Then you are going to start to see, we think, in the next 12-18 months a move in their rates.

Basically Japan is entering its final checkmate phase of the game.

[Ken Eades asked when will the October numbers come out]. ... That data gets released mid-December. I'm not focused on one particular data set. It's naive of me to think that I can call the end of the 70-year debt super-cycle with any kind of precision whatsoever.

What I'm telling you is when you look at all the inputs, look at their balance of trade, look at their full current account, look at the fact they have had 10 finance ministers in six years. You have the BOJ [Bank of Japan] independence somewhat usurped or revoked in the last few weeks when there is a press release put on the BOJ's website, a joint press release from the MOF [Minster of Finance], the BOJ, and the government, that analogous to Bernanke, Geithner, and Hillary Clinton issuing a joint press release saying we're going to end deflation.

This is how it begins to happen. You start to revoke the independence of the central bank and let the politicians run monetary policy, well this is how it falls apart.

So you have Shinzo Abe coming in, the elections in Japan will be around December 16, and Abe we think is a shoo-in, and he is saying they are going to do everything possible to get to 3 percent inflation. He doesn't even know what he wishes for. Because if he gets there, he detonates his debt-bomb.

[Ken Eades asked, next year is it possible you will be going long?] It's possible. Again, I don't want to be naive to say that it's going to happen in the next 12 months. All of the ingredients are there to have this viscous cocktail fall apart. I think that it could probably take a little longer. But to the extent that we see a bond crisis in the Yen that has a massive devaluation? Yes.

Current Account Update

Updated current account and trade balances were posted on December 9. Japan's current account balance surprised to the upside, but do not expect it to last.

Nasdaq reports Japan Current Account Stronger Than Expected.

  • Japan posts current account surplus of Y376.9 billion

  • Figure is higher-than-forecast but still down 29.4% from last year

  • Separate revised GDP figures show no change in overall contraction of 0.9% for third quarter

  • Second-quarter GDP revised to show small contraction

TOKYO--Japan's current account surplus fell in October from a year earlier, as the nation's trade deficit continued to expand, while separate revised gross domestic product figures showed that the economy may have already entered a recession.

The finance ministry said on Monday that the current account surplus narrowed to Y376.9 billion in October before seasonal adjustment. That was slightly larger than the Y218 billion surplus expected by economists surveyed by Dow Jones Newswires and the Nikkei.

"Speaking generally, exports have been the weakest link in recent data, and the direction exports take will be key for economic recovery," said Jun Kawakami, market analyst at Mizuho Securities.

Japan will be in serious trouble as soon as its current account stays negative. That has not happened yet, but it will. As soon as it does, Japan's debt-bomb goes off.

Most Difficult Time to Invest

I wish to conclude with the statement by Kyle Bass "As Dick Mayo [Chairman, Mayo Capital and Founding Partner of GMO] said today, it's actually the most difficult time in the world to invest in his lifetime."

I endorse that statement 100%. Moreover, I would like to add that many now find investment decisions relatively easy. They look at monetary easing by the Fed, by the ECB, by China, etc., as a perpetual green light.

Clearly Kyle Bass does not see it that way, nor do I, nor does John Hussman. Indeed, I believe the only ones who find investment decisions easy are those who do not understand the risks.

Belief Bubble

As I have pointed out on many occasions, if the Fed could have prevented a collapse in 2008, it would have.

If Japan's central bank had an easy cure for deflation, it would have found it long ago. Instead Japan has a massive amount of debt, with nowhere to hide.

If the ECB had an easy solution to the crisis in Greece, Spain, and Italy, there would not be endless meetings followed by endless bickering.

Yet, for whatever reason, there is a bubble in the belief that central banks are in control.

Problem is Debt, With No Easy Cure

The problem is debt. As Bass pointed out "the total credit market debt-to-GDP globally is 350 percent. It's 200 trillion dollars' worth of debt against global GDP of roughly 62 trillion."

The 70-year debt super-cycle is coming to an end. It could have happened last year, or the year before, but it didn't. It may or may not happen in 2013.

Those fully loaded in equities are either ignorant of these facts or they do not care. Those of us who are aware, but also aware the end cannot be precisely timed are the ones who look overly cautious. We are the ones who think "this is a difficult time to invest".

Prudent to be Patient

I am comfortable in my position that better times are ahead for those willing to be patient, even if I cannot precisely say when that will be. In the meantime, I am willing to sit with a position in gold, cash, and various hedges until better opportunities present themselves.
