Working alone won't get you good grades

Jan. 31, 2013 ? Students who work together and interact online are more likely to be successful in their college classes, according to a study published Jan. 30 in the journal Nature Scientific Reports and co-authored by Manuel Cebrian, a computer scientist at the Jacobs School of Engineering at the University of California San Diego.

Cebrian and colleagues analyzed 80,000 interactions between 290 students in a collaborative learning environment for college courses. The major finding was that a higher number of online interactions was usually an indicator of a higher score in the class. High achievers also were more likely to form strong connections with other students and to exchange information in more complex ways. High achievers tended to form cliques, shutting out low-performing students from their interactions. Students who found themselves shut out were not only more likely to have lower grades; they were also more likely to drop out of the class entirely.

"Elite groups of highly connected individuals formed in the first days of the course," said Cebrian, who also is a Senior Researcher at National ICT Australia Ltd, Australia's Information and Communications Technology Research Centre of Excellence. "For the first time, we showed that there is a very strong correspondence between social interaction and exchange of information -- a 72 percent correlation," he said "but almost equally interesting is the fact that these high-performing students form 'rich-clubs', which shield themselves from low-performing students, despite the significant efforts by these lower-ranking students to join them. The weaker students try hard to engage with the elite group intensively, but can't. This ends up having a marked correlation with their dropout rates."

This study co-authored by Luis M. Vaquero, based at Hewlett-Packard UK Labs, shows a way that we might better identify patterns in the classroom that can trigger early dropout alarms, allowing more time for educators to help the student and, ideally, reduce those rates through appropriate social network interventions.

Cebrian's work is part of UC San Diego's wider research effort at the intersection of the computer and social sciences, led by Prof. James H. Fowler, to enhance our understanding of the ways in which people share information and how this impacts areas of national significance, such as the spread of health-related or political behavior.

ZTE V81 Siap Saingi iPad Mini ?

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Dalam perhelatan Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2013 yang lalu, manufaktur perangkat digital berbasis sistem operasi Android asal Cina, Zhongxing Telecommunication Equipment Corporation, yang dikenal dengan mereka dagang ZTE, berharap bisa mengembangkan pangsa pasarnya di Amerika Serikat.

Meskipun kini menduduki peringkat kelima dunia sebagai perusahaan yang berhasil mengapalkan telepon seluler cerdas terbanyak ke seluruh dunia pada kuartal keempat 2012, produk ZTE masih dianggap ?murahan? oleh kebanyakan warga Amerika. Padahal, produk ZTE kini tak kalah dalam persaingan dengan vendor papan atas, semisal HTC atau LG.

Pasar digital Amerika memang menggiurkan dan, bagi sebagian besar penduduk di sana, komputer tablet dianggap sebagai perangkat digital masa depan. Itu sebabnya, selain memasok ponsel cerdas, ZTE kini mencoba menggelontorkan komputer tablet ke Negeri Abang Sam. Tentu dengan strategi yang telah diperhitungkan.

Pada Senin lalu, ZTE mengumumkan komputer tablet pertamanya dengan sistem operasi Android. Namanya ZTE V81. Yang menarik, tablet ini dibuat mirip iPad mini, yakni dengan lebar layar 8 inci dan cenderung berbentuk kotak. Apakah ini strategi ZTE untuk masuk pasar Amerika?

Yang pasti, ukuran layar 8 inci sangat tidak lazim bagi sebuah tablet komputer, dan hanya iPad mini sejauh ini yang mengadopsinya. Kebanyakan tablet yang beredar di pasar memiliki diagonal layar 7 inci dan 10,1 inci. Di Amerika, justru iPad mini kini yang sedang naik daun dan penjualannya terus naik.

ZTE V81 memiliki aspek rasio layar sama dengan iPad mini, yakni 4:3, dengan resolusi mencapai 1024 x 768 piksel. Di dalamnya terdapat prosesor dual-core dengan kecepatan 1,4 GHZ, namun belum diketahui buatan mana prosesor tersebut. Sedangkan total RAM yang disediakan adalah 1 GB, dan memori internal sebesar 4 GB, yang bisa ditambah berkat tersedianya slot kartu memori microSD.

Sayangnya, spesifikasi yang dikeluarkan pihak ZTE sejauh ini masih sangat minim, kecuali bahwa ketebalan V81 mencapai 11,07 milimeter. Bandingkan dengan ketebalan iPad mini, yang hanya 7,2 milimeter. Sedangkan berapa bobotnya, belum diketahui.

Baterai yang diusungnya juga sedikit mengecewakan. ZTE V81 hanya diperkuat baterai berkekuatan 3.700 mAh, lebih kecil dibanding baterai tablet Android pada umumnya yang memiliki kapasitas minimal 4.000 mAh.

Untuk urusan konektivitas secara nirkabel, ZTE V81 dilengkapi dengan Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n dan Bluetooth 2.1. Adapun koneksi yang langsung terhubung dengan perangkat antara lain 3,5 milimeter headphone jack, GPS, HDMI, USB, dan accelerometer. V81 juga mendukung jaringan UMTS (850) 900/1900/2100 MHz dan GSM 850/900/1800/1900 MHz.

ZTE belum memastikan berapa harga jual V81. Namun ada kemungkinan tablet ini akan dihargai di bawah US$ 200 atau sekitar Rp 1,9 juta. Bila betul demikian, ZTE V81 dipastikan menyasar konsumen kelas menengah ke bawah di seluruh dunia. Namun, akankah strategi ini berhasil di Amerika?

Meskipun harganya di bawah iPad mini, banyak pengamat pasar digital yang mengatakan bahwa V81 tak akan laku di Amerika. Penyebabnya, di sana sudah ada Kindle Fire, yang dijual di bawah US$ 200. Sarah Palin and the End of an Era

The news that Sarah Palin will no longer be a paid contributor to Fox News puts an exclamation point on the end of an era, or at least a chapter, in U.S. political history. She could land somewhere else, and she still has her Facebook friends, but it?s hard to imagine she?ll find a more visible or influential platform than Fox.

The former Alaska governor and 2008 vice presidential nominee has been fading from the scene for some time, as she inadvertently highlighted when she complained on Facebook during the Republican convention in August that the network had canceled her scheduled interviews that night. Her brother, Chuck Heath Jr., told Alan Colmes last week on Fox Radio that his sister is ?kind of laying low right now,? though he wouldn?t or couldn?t say when asked why.

Once the face of an energetic and politically potent Tea Party movement, Palin is leaving Fox at a time when polls show the Tea Party at an all-time low in both membership and favorability. Her departure also coincides with calls by some leading Republicans for their party to stop saying things that erode the GOP brand and turn off voters in droves.

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal said bluntly this week at a Republican National Committee meeting in Charlotte that the GOP needs to stop being ?the stupid party,? and former Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour said he agreed. The two were talking in particular about losing Senate candidates Todd Akin of Missouri and Richard Mourdock of Indiana, both of whom made inflammatory (and in Akin?s case, flagrantly ignorant) comments about rape.

But Palin, with her flamboyant rhetoric, has stoked her own disproportionate share of controversies. This is the woman who, after all, coined the term ?death panels? to describe discussions between patients and physicians about end-of-life treatment (killing a bipartisan proposal for Medicare to reimburse doctors for having those talks); who complained of a ?blood libel? against her by ?journalists and pundits? after the Tucson shooting rampage that injured Gabrielle Giffords (the phrase historically relates to the charge that Jews murder children to use their blood in religious rituals); and who last fall accused Obama of ?shuck and jive? in his statements on the killings of U.S. diplomatic personnel in Benghazi (a racist term dating from slavery days).

Former secretary of state Colin Powell ripped Palin, though not by name, for the shucking-and-jiving remark. He said that and a characterization of Obama as "lazy" (by former New Hampshire governor John Sununu, also not cited by name) played into negative stereotypes of blacks and laid bare a ?dark vein of intolerance? within some parts of the GOP.

Palin defended herself by noting other political figures have used the phrase, including New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and White House press secretary Jay Carney. That?s true, and it?s also true that outside of conservative media, Carney largely seems to have gotten a pass. But Cuomo was roundly criticized when he said it during the 2008 Democratic primary campaign (he was a Hillary Clinton supporter). In fact, during that bitter nomination contest, the media monitored every word from Clinton, her husband and her staff for evidence of racial politics. And we found a number of examples, some more valid than others.

The problem for Republicans is that Democrats nominated and elected a black president ? twice now ? while they are still trying to fight perceptions they are hostile to minorities and the policies they support. That makes comments like Palin?s particularly harmful.

The shuck-and-jive incident was one of many signs that Palin has not adapted to a changing political environment. Her Dec. 19 interview on On The Recordwith Greta Van Susteren, her final appearance on the network, was like a time warp back to 2008. She still makes up words (?electioning?). She still repeats sentences and phrases, padding her answers with filler. She still talks in vague generalities, leaving one to wonder how much she really knows. At a time when some conservatives reportedly have concluded it?s time to challenge liberalism rather than keep trying to stoke hostility toward Obama himself, she still attacks Obama in highly personal terms (?Mr. Nobel-Peace-Prize- winning president of ours?). Her diction is still, shall we say, unusual (?I believe that it?s many, many things that he would say and do being deceptive?).

Palin also still says weirdly inexplicable things.

When she first heard that Obama had been named Time magazine?s 2012 Person of the Year, she said her reaction was ?What the heck has he done really? What has he done except drive us over a fiscal cliff? ? Other than that, really, what has he done to unify and make our nation a more perfect union? For the life of me I don?t know, Greta.?

Obama of course has done a lot of things, some of them very polarizing. Palin had an opportunity to invoke Obamacare, gays in the military or any number of moves to back up her point about Obama dividing the nation and, in the view of many, making it less rather than more perfect. It was left to Van Susteren to add a little heft to the discussion, noting that Obama would deserve the designation if it had been awarded for winning a very difficult reelection campaign with a broad swath of demographic groups.

The strangest thing Palin said during that interview was her argument as to why Time?s recognition of Obama was irrelevant. Pointing to herself in seeming disbelief, she said that ?yours truly? had made the magazine?s list of the most influential people in the nation and world, and ?that ought to tell you something right there about the credence that we should give Time magazine and their list of people.? A bemused Van Susteren replied, ?All right. Well. That?s an interesting concept.?

Fox hired Palin three years ago ? at a reported $1 million a year ? because, Fox News Chairman Roger Ailes told The Associated Press, ?she was hot and got ratings.? While the terms of her departure are not public, it appears Fox came to the same conclusion as Palin about her diminishing role on the national and world stage.

CAIRO (AP) ? The director of hospitals in Egypt's Mediterranean city of Port Said says two soccer players are among the 27 people killed in riots there.

Violence erupted in Port Said after a judge sentenced 21 people to death in connection with a Feb. 1 soccer melee that killed 74 fans of the Cairo-based Al-Ahly team.

Dr. Abdel-Raham Farah says Mahmoud Abdel-Halim al-Dizawi, a soccer player in Port Said's Al-Marikh club, was shot three times and died.

He says Tamer al-Fahla, a soccer player who used to play for the city's main Al-Masry team, was also shot dead on his way to Al-Marikh club.

The club is near a prison residents tried to storm Saturday to free defendants in the soccer trial. The military has been deployed to try and restore security.

Finding Success Through the Bumps on Your Stepparenting Journey

As I listened to my husband on?the other end of the phone with his daughter, I knew something bad had happened. He handed the phone to me and said, ?She wants to talk to you.?

Through tears, my stepdaughter, Adrianne,?relayed that her boyfriend of six years had broken up with her. When she was home?over Christmas, she had told us?she thought they would be getting engaged in 2013. Obviously, that?s not?going to happen.

My heart is breaking for her. I know she?ll work through her sadness but at 27 years old, she?s invested a lot of time in a relationship that?s come to a halt.

I?m thankful she has reached out to us during her difficult hour. She asked if she could come spend next week-end with us. Of course, we?re?happy to have her drive the three hours to our place and visit any time.

Here?s the paradox of stepparenting. During her adolescent years, we had the typical stepmom-stepdaughter relationship ? highly strained the majority of the time.?Research shows?the stepmom-stepdaughter relationship is often the most difficult. Our relationship was?no different.

However, as she matured through her young adult years,?Adrianne began reaching out to me more often.??She began asking my opinion on issues and calling us more regularly. She made it a priority to attend family vacations with us and create stronger relationships with her stepsisters.

Well into the second decade of our marriage,?Adrianne and I have a wonderful relationship. I?m thankful we?ve been able to connect and can now enjoy our time together, instead of?walking on egg shells when she?s around.

Does it have to take that long to bond with your stepchild? No!?Some stepparents connect easily and find stepparenting a joy. But many do not.

The adolescent years of stepparenting?are tough.?It?s easy to slip into?thinking that the relationship will?always be strained.

The teen-age years?may take a heavy toll on your relationship. But kids do grow up and often recognize the value of their parents when they leave the nest.

Don?t give up on finding success on your stepparenting journey. Maybe you won?t find it in the first decade of your marriage. Maybe it won?t happen until your stepchildren leave?home.

But it?s never too late to enjoy the success of a thriving stepfamily relationship when it happens.

Leon Panetta, Defense Secretary, Saw Tenure Marked By Fiscal Crisis, Budget Battle

WASHINGTON -- As Defense Secretary Leon Panetta's plane returned home Saturday night, completing his final official overseas trip, his staff gathered to salute his time as Pentagon chief and present him with a symbol of his tenure: a plastic meat ax.

After 19 months at the helm of the world's largest military, Panetta may go down in history as the CIA director who got Osama bin Laden. But his time in the Pentagon came at a critical moment ? dominated by the nation's fiscal crisis and an endless struggle to protect the defense budget from billions of dollars in automatic spending cuts that he has repeatedly likened to a meat ax.

For President Barack Obama, Panetta's experience as a congressman and as budget director in the Clinton administration made him the perfect choice to take on Capitol Hill as the fiscal cliff loomed. So for the last year and a half, Panetta has cajoled, convinced and at times castigated lawmakers in his effort to protect the defense budget.

Lawmakers "just got to suck it up and take on some of the risks," Panetta told soldiers at a stop in Vincenza, Italy, during the trip. He said he tells lawmakers, "I've got men and women in uniform that put their lives on the line in order to fight for this country ? you can have a small bit of the courage they have to do what you have to do."

The budget battle has eaten up much of his time, even as he oversaw the military's final, formal days in Iraq, the start of the last drawdown of troops in Afghanistan, and the end of the successful NATO campaign to end Moammar Gadhafi's reign in Libya.

And while the fiscal debate still rages on, those who worked with him on the Pentagon's E Ring say he was often effective in his dealings with Congress because he was comfortable on Capitol Hill and he spoke the language.

Panetta's personal style also drove his daily interactions. Unlike former Defense Secretary Robert Gates, who read voraciously and could never have too many details, Panetta is a people person. He wants to see one or two pages of talking points and then sit down, face to face, to talk things through.

He's brought his affable personality and infectious, shoulder-shaking laugh to the diplomatic front. Meetings with Middle East leaders sometimes started with a bear hug, or ended in an invitation to go for drinks.

And as he returned to his family's ancestral homeland during his final trip for meetings with leaders there, Panetta ? the self-described son of Italy ? delivered the first few sentences in Italian.

His more genial style was underscored as he gave one of his final policy speeches at King's College in London. Gates, in his last speech, slammed NATO members for relying on the U.S. to carry the brunt of military responsibilities and said the alliance faced a "dim, if not dismal future." Panetta, instead, used his swansong to gently prod allies to be more flexible and creative and to not let budget constraints prevent them from facing security challenges that come up.

Panetta's Pentagon tour saw its share of controversy in the military, with prostitution scandals, spikes in sexual assaults and suicides, and ethical lapses by a handful of senior military leaders. His tenure was much shorter and not nearly as tumultuous as those of his two predecessors, Gates and Donald H. Rumsfeld. The Pentagon agenda had largely been set before Panetta replaced Gates, and the administration saw no need for a major course correction.

However, Panetta drew from his two years as CIA chief to escalate the use of drones for both counterterrorism strikes and intelligence gathering. While he profited from Gates' campaign to dramatically increase investments in drones, he expanded their use to target the al-Qaida affiliates around the world. And he opened up the public debate over them a bit when, on the tarmac at Naval Air Station Sigonella in Sicily, Panetta became one of the first U.S. officials to talk openly about the CIA's use of killer drones ? long a taboo subject.

During speeches in the last week, as he set the table for his legacy, Panetta talked repeatedly of the war on al-Qaida. The man behind the raid that killed bin Laden wants to ensure that the targeting continues, and that it blocks the terror network from gaining footholds in North Africa, Somalia and Yemen, and from returning to its bases in Afghanistan.

Panetta insists that al-Qaida's leadership has been decimated. But he acknowledges the fight is far from over and victory not yet in reach. In fact, he spent much of his last trip dealing with the hostage crisis in Algeria, where Islamic militants linked to al-Qaida attacked a natural gas complex in the middle of the Sahara desert.

Sometime next month, Panetta will leave the Pentagon, finally returning home to his beloved walnut farm in Carmel, Calif. In the farewell ceremony on board his military plane, the son of Italy thanked his staff for working to protect America, saying he believes they made the world safer.

In turn, they presented him with a cake. Across the top was written: Arrivederci.

?Chip Kelly will be an outstanding head coach for the Eagles,? Eagles owner Jeff Lurie said. ?He has a brilliant football mind. He motivates his team with his actions as well as his words. He will be a great leader for us and will bring a fresh, energetic approach to our team.?

Asked if his up-tempo spread offense can work in the NFL, Kelly admitted recently he doesn?t know.
?
?I don't think anybody knows any answers until someone does it,? he said. ?The Washington Redskins are doing a pretty good job. The kid at Carolina [Cam Newton] has done a pretty good job. But it depends. I don't know. I've never coached in that league. I visited practices and talked to people about it.
?
?The one thing about that, about everything, you have to have good players. Sometimes the coaching aspect is way overrated. We don't play the game. I think college football is a personnel?driven game, so is the NFL. Your job as a coach very simply is to put your players in positions to make plays, get out of the way and go make them."

Former Oregon running back LaMichael James, now with the 49ers, is certain Kelly's system will succeed in the pros.

?One hundred percent, yes,? James told CSNBayArea recently. ?I don?t think anything can stop that offense ? NFL, college or high school, no matter what it is. I think Washington runs a similar offense, and I like the way they do their things, too. I think it would be kind of similar to that, I think a little faster though.

?I think he can be one of the best coaches in the NFL. I respect him, he?s a super-great coach, and that?s the only thing I can say about him. He?s just great.?

The Eagles were 4-12 this year after an 8-8 season in 2011. They haven?t won a playoff game since 2008 and last reached the Super Bowl in 2004, losing to the Patriots.

Kelly is the first person to become head coach of the Eagles without ever having played or coached in the NFL since Bert Bell, who founded the franchise in 1933 and was head coach from 1936 to 1941, compiling a record of 10-46-2.

Dick Vermeil went from UCLA to the Eagles after the 1975 season, but he had spent time previously in the NFL, as an assistant under George Allen with the Rams.

After graduating from the University of New Hampshire, Kelly began his coaching career at Columbia as defensive backs and special teams coach for the freshman team in 1990. He spent two years at Columbia, one back at UNH, one at Johns Hopkins and then 1994 through 2006 back at his alma mater in Concord, N.H., including 1999 through 2006 as offensive coordinator.

Oregon went 12-1, 12-2 and 12-1 the last three years, and the team?s wide-open, innovative passing attack piled up points in a hurry and made Kelly one of the most highly sought-after college coaches in recent years.

Some skeptics believe Kelly?s high-octane offense won?t work in the NFL because defenses are so much more complex than in college and because defensive players are so much faster that the offense loses its advantage.

But Kelly said if he coached in the NFL, he would adapt his offense accordingly.

?There's a lot of ways to play football,? he said. ?Trends go one way and the other. ? if you weren't in the room with Amos Alonzo Stagg and Knute Rockne when they invented this game, you stole it from somebody else.

?Any coach is going to learn from other people and see how they can implement it in their system. Anything you do has to be personnel driven. You have to adapt to the personnel you have. There's a lot of great offenses out there, but does it fit with the personnel you have? The key is making sure what you're doing is giving your people a chance to be successful.?

Kelly?s hiring ends a wild 2?-week coaching search led by owner Jeff Lurie, with team president Don Smolenski and general manager Howie Roseman also involved. The Eagles interviewed 11 candidates, including Seahawks defensive coordinator Gus Bradley for a second time on Tuesday.

Kelly is the third head coach hired by Lurie, who bought the Eagles from Norman Braman in 1994. The first two, Ray Rhodes and Andy Reid, were both named NFL Coach of the Year at least once.

Lurie hired Rhodes to replace Rich Kotite after the Eagles lost their last seven games in 1994, and he hired Reid after the Eagles went 3-13 in Rhodes? last season, 1998.

The Eagles reached the playoffs in nine of Reid?s first 12 years but missed the postseason the last two years. Since late in 2010, they are 12-23.

Reuters reports: A Muslim cleric with a history of ties to the military who has been calling for the Pakistani government to resign reached a deal with the administration on Thursday that will give him a say in the electoral process ahead of elections.

Muhammad Tahirul Qadri triggered a political crisis by launching mass protests in the capital four days ago calling for electoral reforms to clean up Pakistani politics.

He has been pushing for the military to play a role in the formation of the caretaker administration that takes over in the run-up to scheduled elections.

"We have reached an agreement," Qadri, who supported an army coup in 1999, told supporters camped out near parliament. "Allah granted us a victory and now you can go home."

The cleric has been delivering long, fiery speeches from behind a bullet-proof glass box because of his opposition to Taliban militants.?Full Story

No. 2 Notre Dame women defeat Georgetown 79-64

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) ? Notre Dame's tough defense and good free-throw shooting were too much for Georgetown.

The second-ranked Fighting Irish held the Hoyas' Sugar Rodgers, the nation's leading scorer, to a season-low 14 points and scored 35 points from the free-throw line to overcome a season-high 28 turnovers and beat Georgetown 79-64 Tuesday night for their 10th straight victory.

"We played really well early," Notre Dame coach Muffet McGraw said. "We ran our press well, got some easy baskets, but then the turnovers really hurt us."

Kayla McBride scored 17 points, Skylar Diggins had 15 points, nine assists and six steals and Jewel Loyd added 14 and defended Rodgers for most of the game. Natalie Achonwa added 12 points and 10 rebounds for Notre Dame (15-1, 4-0 Big East).

Jasmine Jackson led Georgetown with 15 points. Rodgers was 1-of-6 shooting in the first half with just four points and finished 6 of 18 from the floor, including 0 of 7 from 3-point range as Georgetown (10-7, 1-3) lost its third straight. Rodgers said she injured her right hand when a Notre Dame player fell on it in the first half.

"But I think it's OK now," she said.

Brown said it was an off night for Rodgers, but also credited the Notre Dame defense.

"When we tried to run our pick and rolls, he said. "They trapped the pick. I thought they did a good job."

McGraw was pleased with Loyd's defense.

"She is very quick and very strong. That is a great combination for a defender," she said.

Notre Dame quickly took control, opening a 15-2 lead in the first five minutes as the Irish forced six turnovers and held the Hoyas to 1-of-7 shooting. The lead could have been even bigger, but the Irish had five turnovers of their own by the time Georgetown scored its second basket seven minutes in.

The Irish repeatedly passed their way inside for baskets. Whitney Holloway threw a pass from the top of the key to Achonwa, who flicked it instantly on the other side of the basket to Ariel Braker for an easy basket. Two possessions later, Braker set up Achonwa with a bounce pass for a basket. The next time down, Diggins drove inside, then kicked it out for a 3-pointer by Loyd to make it 31-18.

"I think our rotation was bad in the middle. I think sometimes they're so young that we forget what we're supposed to do," Brown said.

McBride said the Irish were able to get the Hoyas off balance.

"We were able to get the defense moving and get layups and short jumpshots," she said.

Diggins and Braker then each made two free throws, extending the lead to 35-11, as the Irish made their first 17 free throws before Diggins finally missed two in a row before the Hoyas attempted their first free throw.

Brown complained that the Irish were getting too many calls, yelling to the officials: "I know this is South Bend, but they can't play that perfect."

A jumper by Andrea White sparked a 13-2 run for the Hoyas. Rodgers scored her first basket during the run to cut the lead to 35-20. A layup by Katie McCormick cut the 39-24.

Georgetown center Vanessa Moore was called for a technical foul after elbowing Madison Cable midway through the first half and was ejected late in the half for saying something after she and Achonwa got tangled up under the basket. Brown said afterward that he didn't think the second technical would have been called in a men's game.

After trailing 44-29 at halftime, the Hoyas narrowed the lead to 46-33 on a 3-pointer by White, but Diggins answered with a 3-pointer and the Irish eventually stretched the lead to 23 again. The Hoyas used a 10-2 run to cut the lead to 62-47 on jumper by Rodgers midway through the second half. But the Irish responded with a 9-0 run to put the game away.

Chelsea Clinton Heads Inaugural Event

Another Clinton is taking on an important role in the 2013 Presidential Inauguration.

The Presidential Inaugural Committee announced Tuesday that Chelsea Clinton, daughter of former President Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, will head up the National Day of Service on Saturday.

Clinton is to serve as honorary chair for the Day of Service, during which President Obama invites Americans across the country to volunteer in their communities in remembrance Martin Luther King, Jr.

"We are thrilled that Chelsea Clinton will play such a critical role in mobilizing Americans across the country to take part in the National Day of Service," PIC President and CEO Steve Kerrigan said in an emailed statement.

As part of that role, Clinton will speak at the Service Summit on the National Mall Saturday, the PIC announced Tuesday.

Other speakers and performers at the event include actress and PIC co-chair Eva Longoria, singer/songwriter Ben Folds and Iraq War veterans Rep. Tammy Duckworth, D-Wis., and Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden (Vice President Joe Biden's son).

Longoria will also host an inaugural concert celebrating Latino culture at the Kennedy Center on Sunday.

Folds performed at the president's 100th fundraiser, a New York City concert that was expected to bring in $5.1 million.

The former first daughter tweeted a link to the Day of Service section on the PIC's website that allows users to find nearby community service opportunities for the weekend or to sign up to host an event.

In an op-ed on the Day of Service, Clinton wrote about how her grandmothers taught her to value service during her childhood.

"They both had hard lives growing up during the Depression and World War II, but despite the obstacles they faced, they found time to volunteer at their churches and community centers and later, their kids' schools," Clinton wrote. "They created families full of love, support and service."

Clinton has come a long way from the curly-haired youth that was America's first daughter for eight years. Her political profile recently got a boost when she stepped up to dole out information about her mother's condition while the secretary of state was in the hospital.

The 32-year-old NBC correspondent recently told Vogue that in the past she had eschewed the thought of a career in politics but now is beginning to embrace the idea.

Americans raiding 401(k)s to pay the bills

One in four Americans is raiding their?meager?retirement savings to pay their?monthly bills, according to a new study.

When Amy Shankland's husband, John, was laid off from his job, they tapped into their IRAs to get by. With credit card debt, big medical expenses, two young sons, the Shanklands had?few options.

"We didn't know what to do. It was either bankruptcy or cash in our IRAs," Amy Shankland?told NBC News.

The Shanklands are not alone. Americans are borrowing against their 401(k) to pay for non-retirement needs such as mortgages, credit card debt or college tuition,?according to?a new study from financial advisory firm HelloWallet.?That?amounts?for?more?than?$70?billion?in?annual?withdrawals.

Financial experts say it's a troubling trend.

"If they cannot pay their bills while they have a paycheck coming in, how do they think they're going to pay those exact same bills later on in life when they no longer have a paycheck coming in?" said?Suze Orman, host of CNBC's "The Suze Orman Show." "It makes no sense in any circumstance to take a loan from a 401(k)."

Such loans often come with penalties,?additional taxes and lost interest -- making retirement goals that much harder to reach.?

New research from the AARP?also shows that?those ages 50 and over are?carrying?higher?balances?on?their?credit?cards?--?$8,278 in 2012 compared?to?$6,258?for?the?under-50 population. ?That debt makes it more likely they'll borrow against their 401(k).

Financial?experts?recommend?an?emergency?fund?equal?to?three?months?of?your?salary.?Experts?also?advise?that?at?age?35,?you?should?have?at?least?a?year's?salary?in?your?401(k)?or?IRA.?By?age?45,?three?years'?salary.?And?by?retirement at?age 67,?you?should?have?at?least?eight?times?your?salary?socked?away.

Six years after tapping out their IRAs, the Shanklands are both working -- and once again saving for their golden years.?

"We've worked very hard to get to where we are today," said Amy Shankland.

Hagel reaching out to all 100 senators in push to win confirmation for Pentagon chief

WASHINGTON - Former Sen. Chuck Hagel, President Barack Obama's choice to be defence secretary, is reaching out to all 100 senators and will be meeting personally with dozens of them starting this week.

That comes from an official working on his confirmation, who was not authorized to speak publicly on the matter and spoke on condition of anonymity.

The sessions will be vital for a nomination that faces outright opposition from a handful of Republicans, nervous questions from influential Democrats and plenty of non-committal senators.

Hagel's confirmation hearing before the Armed Services Committee will probably occur within weeks. Hagel has gotten backing from some key supporters, but he has been dogged by questions of whether he's soft on Iran, weak in his backing for Israel and opposed to gay rights.
