Fewer Than One Quarter of Small Businesses Have Social Media ...
Small businesses are getting better at using social media to meet marketing and customer goals. However, they struggle with figuring out a strategy and deploying social media in that strategy.
Fewer than one-quarter of small businesses (24%) use social media as part of a planned social media strategy. Another 29% use social media in an ad hoc way, suggesting that they are intrigued with social media but aren?t sure exactly how to make it work for them. That?s according to the 2012 Small and Medium Social Business Study conducted by the SMB Group earlier this year in 2012.
But even the ad-hoc users are more advanced than than the 47% of small businesses that do not use social media at all. But that?s actually gotten better since 2011, when 56% were not using social media.
This data suggests (1) there?s interest in using social media, particularly as more small businesses hear use cases about social media and see their customers using it, but (2) businesses don?t know how to put social media to use in a systematic planned way. Most likely they don?t have the time to investigate and learn all the social media sites, figure out how which are best social venues for their business, and then tie techniques back to their business objectives ? let alone measure it all.
Here is what you should do:
- If you operate or work in a small business and you have a social media strategy, take heart. You are ahead of the majority of your peers and possibly your competition. But what if your company is among the 29% using social media informally? You?re actually still better than almost half of your peers ? because they are not yet using social media at all. Keep going and leverage this competitive advantage. Don?t fall behind now.
- For consultants, marketing agencies and technology companies, the low hanging fruit is that 29% already using social media informally. They are already at least partially convinced of the value of social media, and so are more likely than non-users to be willing to spend on consulting, services and tools to create and carry out a social media strategy. What the informal users need is a better roadmap of WHAT to do and HOW to do it ? and WHY. Tools also help by giving them a framework for using social media in their daily business processes and lessening the manual work. In your marketing efforts, you may want to target these informal users with your messaging and offerings.

johir.khan: An Education in Classlessness | Economics reference ...
Here's the NY Post's (natch) account: "The Post's Dave Seifman forward some pretty choice quotes from Mayor Bloomberg going off on state Sen. Bill Perkins, a major opponent of charter schools, on his weekly WOR radio show this morning. Bloomberg jabs at the pol for attending "elite private schools" and says he's been "violently" against choice for parents."
Now's not the right time to interject a tired pot and kettle analogy, but it does take a certain amount of chutzpah to attack Perkins when the mayor probably hadn't set foot inside a public school-his kids went elsewhere obviously-until he was elected mayor. And the same goes for Chancellor Klein who, along with Bloomberg, brought absolutely zero knowledge of public education to the job?when he was elevated to his supreme commander post. And this from a man who spends all of his weekends in Bermuda!
But what's even more egregious in our view is the mayor's failure to see with any clarity what?the charter phenomenon says about his own educational effort-a point that we have already made before. Here's the Post again: "Bill Perkins is a guy who went to elite private schools, and he represents a district where most people can?t afford elite private schools, and charter schools are their opportunity to get their kids a great education," said Bloomberg. "I think the numbers are something - there?s 10,000 places this year - more places for charter schools, and there?s something like 50 or 60,000 applicants for the 10,000 places."
Now, after eight years of so-called reform-along with reams of flack touting miraculous advance-we have stampedes in poor neighborhoods to flee the public school system as fast as possible. The Post's Seifman continues to spotlight the mayor's views in a follow up story: "Bloomberg argued that charter schools promote competition, which is one reason public schools in the city are improving. "Competition is great for everybody, and it's one of those things we want to encourage, and Perkins has been violently against it, while the educators and the public and the parents want more of [it]," the mayor said."
If the Harlem clamor for choice is any indication, this kind of a competition can best be described in sports language as a blowout-and as an indictment of the failure of the overall?Bloomberg effort. Diane Ravitch's hearing testimony sheds light on the true nature of this far from healthy competition: "Some charters are as idealistic as the original vision, but many others now see themselves as competition for public schools. They want to take over public school space and replace public schools. They revel in stories about beating public schools, not helping them."
But as far as Bloomberg's observation that the charter competition is in some way aiding public school improvement, where's the evidence of that? Which brings us back to the point that we made last week: "So there is obviously a perception of failure at the grass roots level. Whether this is a reality or not-and studies indicate that the charter exploits are exaggerated in the aggregate-doesn't matter. And the clamoring for, "choice," is an indictment of the current system that the media did so much to tout when it was all about mayoral control."
So what's missing from all of this trumped up outrage, is a concomitant genuine outrage at the three card monte game that the Bloombergistas have played-with Rupert and Morticia acting as the audience shills-with a gullible public. It is time to bring in the forensic accountants, and Perkins and his state senate crew should hold follow up hearings on testing fraud, unmerited teacher and administrator bonuses, and a profligate expansion of an educational bureaucracy that has failed to deliver real success even with an 80% increase in its allocation.
But that might not even be necessary if what they think is going to happen next spring actually does-new school tests that expose the naked emperor's false positives. As the NY Post reports: "Criticized for having steadily dumbed down standardized tests -- and trumpeted phantom gains -- the state Education Department says students in grades 3 to 8 taking required math and English exams starting tomorrow won't pass as easily this year. "Students are going to have to know more and do more to demonstrate proficiency on the exams," said John King, senior deputy state education commissioner."
And it will be more difficult to teach to the test: "A rising number of pupils have passed in recent years as cut scores dipped so low that some kids could randomly guess enough right answers to squeak by, experts found. State Board of Regents Chancellor Merryl Tisch and Education Commissioner David Steiner "are committed to ending the annual debate about whether our state tests have become harder or easier," King told The Post. "Doing that will require us to ensure that our tests become both less predictable and more comprehensive in terms of the number of items they test."
But, once the test fraud is exposed will it finally become clear that, as far as NYC's master of the house is concerned, "there's not much there?" Here's the Post's observation: "The sliding standards weren't revealed when Mayor Bloomberg touted dramatic spikes in state scores as a triumph of his stewardship. But the lid was blown off when federal officials found reading and math scores for New York students had remained flat on a national benchmark exam since 2007, while their scores on the state tests skyrocketed over the same period."
Education Secretary Arne Duncan, cited in Sol Stern's upcoming City Journal article, makes this telling point: ?We have to stop lying to children,? education secretary Arne Duncan said recently at a meeting of the National Governors Association (NGA).?We have to look them in the eye and tell them the truth at every stage of their educational trajectory.?
If Mike Bloomberg really wants to advance the interests of NYC school kids, he can begin by laying off the glass house?ad hominen attacks on Bill Perkins; and he can follow Duncan's advice by starting to?tell the truth-to those with an actual stake in public education-about how all of his extra funding and top down control of the educational bureaucracy has yielded a truly lackluster result. Don't expect this anytime soon, because mea culpas are conspicuously absent in the Bloomberg personality profile.

snarl lamplight: K-12 Math Teaching Opportunities ? Apply Before ...
The peak hiring season for private and independent schools is about to begin!? Please consider forwarding this information to students interested in teaching mathematics.
Southern Teachers Agency provides a free resource to prospective teachers with knowledgeable, professional placement counselors guiding candidates through the competitive search process.? Hundreds of private and independent schools around the South list vacancies with STA each year, beginning in January! We encourage interested students to apply prior to the winter break to ensure ample time to prepare a credentials file for the peak hiring season. It is important that students begin talking with potential references and requesting letters of reference, as well.
All active STA candidates are invited to our job fairs.? These job fairs provide an excellent opportunity for candidates to personally meet with school administrators who are trying to fill actual vacancies.? Administrators then schedule interviews with candidates of interest to take place during the fair.
Southern Teachers Agency will hold three job fairs for active, registered STA candidates in 2013:
1)??? Best of the South! Atlanta, GA, February 9
??????Candidate application deadline: January 25
2)??? STA at NAIS: Philadelphia, PA, February 27 ? March 1
??????Candidate application deadline: February 15
3)??? A Capitol Campaign: Washington, DC, March 23
??????Candidate application deadline: March 11
The STA online application can be found on our website at www.southernteachers.com. As a reminder, private schools certainly value candidates who have participated in a teacher certification program, but have the flexibility to hire teachers with a strong academic background who have not taken education courses.
Thank you for your consideration.? If you have questions, we would be delighted to speak with you about STA, our process, or the types of math teaching jobs available.
Best regards,
Shannon Johnston

The "12-12-12" concert at?New York's?Madison Square Garden?features a who's who of rock and pop, including The Rolling Stones,?Alicia Keys,?Chris Martin,?Billy Joel,?Eric Clapton,?Kanye West?and Bon Jovi.
"How do I begin again? My city's in ruins?" Springsteen sang. He was joined by?Jon Bon Jovi?for "Born to Run," ushering in what was to be a night of musical duets.
Next up,?Roger Waters?performed alongside?Eddie Vedder, and later in the evening?Paul McCartney?was due to jam with Dave Grohl.
Comedian?Adam Sandler?took the stage for a Sandy-themed spoof on?Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah," rhyming the title with "Sandy, Screw Ya!"
Backstage, actress?Susan Sarandon?recounted losing power in her?New York?home but said that was a small hardship compared to the real victims who lost their homes.
Steven Van Zandt, guitarist of the E Street Band, scolded "the oil companies" and "Wall Street guys" for not doing more to help.
"Even with the music business not what it used to be... we are proud to be here," he said.
Producer?John Sykes?said Waters, McCartney and?Chris Martin?of Coldplay had reached out to "other legends to join them on stage and create once-in-a-lifetime moments."
Before the concert, Sykes said $32 million had already been raised from ticket sales and sponsorships. With the concert's potential to reach 2 billion people through broadcast and digital platforms, organizers are hoping to raise tens of millions more.
To help with the fundraising, celebrities such as Leonardo DiCaprio,?Kristen Stewart,?Jake Gyllenhaal,?Chelsea Clinton?and?Billy Crystal?are taking part in a telethon during the concert, which is expected to last between four and five hours.
It is being broadcast live on television, radio, movie theaters, on Facebook and iHeartRadio, and streamed on digital billboards in?New York's Times Square,?London?and?Paris.
More than 130 people were killed when Sandy pummeled the?East Coast?of the?United States?in October. Thousands more were left homeless as the storm tore through areas of?New York, New Jersey and?Connecticut, causing billions of dollars in damage.
Sykes said personal stories of neighborhoods and people severely affected by Sandy will be showcased during the concert.
Sykes was also involved with "The Concert for?New York?City" after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, which raised more than $30 million for charity.
He said technological advances over the past decade have exponentially changed the reach of fundraising.
"We have both traditional and new media behind us in a way that we've never had before, and that is really going to be the 'x-factor' on how much money we can raise for the victims."
Donations raised from the one-night concert produced by?Clear Channel Entertainment?and? The Weinstein Company, will go to the?Robin Hood Relief Fund, which will provide money and materials to groups helping people hardest hit by the storm.

Official: Syrian forces fired Scud missiles at rebels
WASHINGTON/BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad have fired Scud missiles at rebels trying to overthrow Syria's government, a senior U.S. official said on Wednesday, a step seen as an escalation in Assad's struggle to retain power.
U.S. officials said they were unaware of any previous instances in which Scuds were used against the rebels since the start of the 20-month-old uprising, which has killed more than 40,000 people.
White House spokesman Jay Carney declined to confirm the reports, saying he was aware of them but could not discuss intelligence matters.
"If true, this would be the latest desperate act from a regime that has shown utter disregard for innocent life," he said. "The idea that the Syrian regime would launch missiles in its borders at its own people is stunning, desperate, a completely disproportionate military escalation."
A senior U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Scuds had been used.
In Brussels, a NATO official, who also spoke on condition of anonymity, said a number of "Scud-type" short-range ballistic missiles had been launched inside Syria in recent days.
"Allied intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance assets have detected the launch of a number of unguided, short-range ballistic missiles inside Syria this week," the official said.
"Trajectory and distance travelled indicate they were Scud-type missiles," the NATO official said.
NATO agreed last week to send Patriot anti-missile systems to alliance member Turkey to reinforce its air defenses and calm its fears of coming under missile attack, possibly with chemical weapons, from neighboring Syria.
The NATO official said the Syrian missiles had landed inside Syria and no missiles had hit Turkish territory. He said the Western alliance had no information about what casualties or damage the missiles had caused.
Asked if there was any evidence of Syrian use of chemical weapons, he said: "We have no information concerning the payload."
U.S. President Barack Obama warned Assad last week not to use chemical weapons against Syrian opposition forces, saying there would be unspecified consequences if he did so.
The United States, Germany and Netherlands have all agreed to send Patriot missiles to protect Turkey, but the missile batteries are not expected to arrive for several more weeks.
The New York Times, which initially reported Syria's use of the missiles, quoted one official as saying more than six had been fired at the rebels. Another official said the missiles had been launched from the Damascus area at targets in northern Syria, the Times said.
U.S. officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Reuters they would not dispute the Times report.
Speaking separately, U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland, while not confirming the use of Scuds, said the United States has also been seeing the use of incendiary barrel bombs, which she said was "another egregious weapon" that was "completely indiscriminate in terms of civilians."
"As the regime becomes more and more desperate, we see it resorting to increased lethality and more vicious weapons moving forward," she told a State Department briefing.
News of Syria's use of Scud missiles broke as Western and Arab nations sympathetic to the uprising against Assad gave full political recognition to the opposition.
