CLC World Appoints Martin Kandel to Lead US Expansion ...

ORLANDO, FL (January 15, 2013) ? CLC World, one of Europe?s leading property developers and operators of holiday leisure products, has appointed Martin ?Marty? Kandel as Chief Executive Officer of CLC World USA, the company?s Florida-based mixed-use development division.

Kandel has responsibility for all aspects of the US part of the business, including sales and marketing operations for whole and shared ownership at CLC World?s first US resorts, Encantada and Regal Oaks, both located in Orlando. He said: ?This is a great time to import to North America the unique CLC product and the company?s formula for continuous and sustained growth.?

Kandel is a former Maryland Assistant Attorney General. He served on the Governor?s Task Force on Timesharing and produced the legislation to govern timeshare, as well as developing the policies and procedures for its enforcement.

He founded Acumen Sales & Marketing Group in 1992 to develop, market and sell vacation ownership and travel club products in Daytona Beach, Ormond Beach and Orlando, Florida. He has previous experience of European operations in the industry and served for six years on the ARDA (American Resort Development Association) Board of Directors.

Encantada is projected to be open for US sales on 2 April 2013, while Regal Oaks is currently under construction and will open in 2014 with full completion in 2015. Between them, the two resorts will have more than 800 two- and three-bedroom townhouse units. The two resorts have more than 800 two and three bedroom townhouse units and are at the heart of all that Florida has to offer. CLC World has recently affiliated with Interval International and is represented in the US by Baker, Hostetler.

China's Internet population surges to 564 million, 75 percent on mobile

More Chinese citizens than ever have access to the Internet thanks to mobile technology driving Internet penetration.

According a governmental report released by the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC), an estimated 51 million new Chinese users accessed the Internet in 2012, bringing the number of online users to 564 million, an increase of ten percent. This, in turn, has boosted the country?s penetration rate by 3.8 percentage points -- reaching 42.1 percent -- since the end of 2011.

The increase in users, which is larger than the population of Spain, has been laid at the feet of mobile technology. The mobile tech boom, which includes the increased use of tablets and smartphones, has made connecting to online networks easier for Chinese citizens. As a result, the report says that those who go online via tablets, smartphones and wireless networks increased by 18.1 percent, bringing the wireless mobile population to 420 million.

First reported by Techweb, the report also states that while Internet cafes have begun to slide in popularity, desktop computer use also fell by nearly three percentage points in 2012, and laptop use dropped to 45.9 percent of users. Mobile technology use has leapt from 69.3 percent to 74.5 percent.

Microblogging increased six percentage points, growing to a population of 309 million Chinese Internet users. Online shopper rates ramped up to 242 million people. Using mobile technology to buy items online has increased by 6.6 percentage points compared to 2011.

Earlier this month, the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology estimated that China's Internet population will reach roughly 800 million users by 2015. Mobile Internet access, enjoying a prominent place worldwide, is expected to drive Internet penetration in order to reach this goal, especially as there are over 1 billion mobile phone users in the country.

I'm happy to report that all of our indoor decor is down, but sad to say that our outside decor remains up! ?Its been so cold that I just haven't been able to get motivated to go outside & take it all down! This past weekend our temps were up & it would have been the perfect time to do it, but I had a sick little boy to tend to instead! :(

Needless to say.....I'm determined to get it all down this week!!

Now that Christmas has come & gone, I know that some of you have Valentine's Day on the brain! Do y'all decorate for Valentine's Day?! I typically don't, but this year I'm feeling inspired to do a little decorating around the house! I'm thinking a festive wreath for our front door & maybe even a few other little projects!

Social trading: DCM Dealer uses Twitter and Facebook sentiment to help traders make investment decisions

We?ve followed the story of Derwent Capital Markets for some time, and today the London-based company has launched its unique stock trading platform, which uses social media data to help traders make moves on the market.

DCM Dealer is a Web-based platform based on technology developed back when London-based Derwent was putting together a Twitter-based hedge fund. While the fund itself was quietly dissolved after one month (a CNBC report today says that it had just $40 million in assets and entered a market that was just too hostile to continue in), the company maintained its faith in the concept behind the fund ? that moves in the stock market could be predicted by analysis of social media sentiment.

The technology has been repurposed and productized, with Derwent aiming it at day traders. First came an iOS app last year, and now there?s DCM Dealer, which is designed for spread betting and CFD (Contracts For Difference)?derivatives?trading as opposed to directly buying and selling stock.

While there are a number of features included that traders will find useful, such as built-in news feeds and email alerts when specified events occur, what makes this interesting is that sentiment for stocks, indices, FX and commodities on social media channels such as Twitter and Facebook is measured and displayed as scores between 0 and 100 (where 0 represents a very negative attitude and 100 a very positive attitude). Users will be able to view charts that show how sentiment has changed over time.

While no-one is claiming that sentiment is a 100% perfect guide that will help traders in every case, there?s strong evidence that it?s a useful indicator of future stock performance. We reported last year that Derwent Capital Markets says its short-lived hedge fund?returned 1.86% in its sterling shares, ahead of the market and the average hedge fund. This supports academic research into the subject, which formed the basis of DCM?s work. The company has also published case studies that show, for example, how?sentiment seemingly ?predicted? the future price of?Facebook stock.

Lance Armstrong on Monday visited the Austin, Texas, office of the cancer foundation he started to apologize to the staff of about 100 people, a spokeswoman for the Livestrong Foundation said.

"He had a private conversation with the staff, who have done the important work of the foundation for many years," said foundation spokeswoman Katherine McLane.

The apology came on the day that Armstrong was scheduled to tape an interview with Oprah Winfrey to air on Thursday -- his first interview since being stripped of his seven Tour de France titles.

The disgraced cyclist plans to admit in the interview to doping throughout his career, USA Today reported on Saturday.

"Evan Rachel Wood and husband Jamie Bell confirmed that they are expecting their first child later this year," a rep for the pregnant actress, 25, and actor, 26, tells Us Weekly exclusively. "The couple is thrilled."

It's just the latest unexpected news for the Hollywood twosome, who got married in California on Oct. 30 in a top-secret bash, where the "Mildred Pierce" actress wore a custom Chantilly lace mermaid gown by Carolina Herrera. The British-born "Man on a Ledge" actor first met Wood in 2005, when they costarred together in Green Day's "Wake Me Up When September Ends" video. After splitting in 2006, they reunited in summer 2011 -- with Bell proposing in early 2012.

Back in November, Wood shot down false speculation that she was expecting. "Sorry to disappoint. But no baby on the way here," the "True Blood" star (once engaged to Marilyn Manson) tweeted after she was photographed touching her stomach and wearing a baggy poncho at an L.A. grocery store.

GOP Congressman Defends Todd Akin?s ?Legitimate Rape? Comment: ?He?s Partly Right?

Months after former Rep. Todd Akin (R-MO) made the controversial claim that female victims of ?legitimate rape? have biological mechanisms that reject and prevent pregnancy, Rep. Phil Gingrey (R-GA) defended those comments as ?partly right,? citing a specific scenario involving wine and adrenaline.

Speaking to the Marrietta Daily Journal, Gingrey, co-chair of the GOP?s Doctor Caucus, defended the former congressman and failed senate candidate?s distinction between ?legitimate? and ?illegitimate rape?:

?What he meant by legitimate rape was just look, someone can say I was raped: a scared-to-death 15-year-old that becomes impregnated by her boyfriend and then has to tell her parents, that?s pretty tough and might on some occasion say, ?Hey, I was raped.? That?s what he meant when he said legitimate rape versus non-legitimate rape. I don?t find anything so horrible about that.?

Gingrey then went on to defend Akin?s more controversial claim that in the event of a ?legitimate? rape, the female body works to prevent pregnancy. ?He?s partly right on that,? the Georgia congressman said:

?I?ve delivered lots of babies, and I know about these things. It is true. We tell infertile couples all the time that are having trouble conceiving because of the woman not ovulating, ?Just relax. Drink a glass of wine. And don?t be so tense and uptight because all that adrenaline can cause you not to ovulate.? So he was partially right wasn?t he??

Critics of Akin?s beliefs have pointed to the fact that rape does not actually lower the odds of pregnancy, and that falsely reported rapes, i.e., ?illegitimate rapes,? are incredibly rare.

UPDATE: Asked for comment by the Atlanta Journal Constitution, Rep. Gingrey claimed the quotes have been unfairly misconstrued by his political opponents:

?At a breakfast yesterday morning, I was asked why Democrats made abortion a central theme of the presidential campaign. I do not defend, nor do I stand by, the remarks made by Rep. Akin and Mr. Mourdock. In my attempt to provide context as to what I presumed they meant, my position was misconstrued.?
